Tracing the Lateral Shift with Pins
Pin a sheet to a drawing board, outline the slab and set two pins in line on one side; sighting them through the opposite face, add two more pins in line with their images. Joining the points shows the ray bending towards the normal on entry and away from it on exit, so the emergent ray runs parallel to the incident one, displaced sideways by an amount that grows with the angle of incidence and the thickness. Bubble-free glass keeps the pin images clean.
