What Is the Hare and the Lion Chart Used For?
In the Panchatantra story, the animals of the forest agree to send the lion one of their number each day so that he stops hunting at will. When the hare’s turn comes, it arrives late, tells the lion that another lion stopped it on the way, and leads him to a deep well; the lion sees his own reflection, takes it for the rival and leaps in. Children enjoy the reversal, and the moral — quick thinking can defeat brute strength — gives a moral science or value education period plenty to discuss.
Teachers of pre-primary and primary classes use the chart to tell the tale, ask pupils to predict what the hare will do next, and then have them retell or act it out. With English and Hindi on one chart, and editions in Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil or Telugu for schools in South India, the same story can be used in the language period as well. The laminated faces wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth; avoid folding the chart, as the film keeps any crease.
