What Is the Horse and Buffalo Chart Used For?
In the version usually told in Indian schools, a horse that has come off worse in a fight with a buffalo goes to a man and asks for help to take revenge. The man agrees, rides the horse against the buffalo — and afterwards keeps both animals for his own use. Too late, the horse sees that its anger has cost it its freedom. The story is an old one; Aesop told a similar fable with a stag in place of the buffalo.
The fable gives teachers a way to talk with children about anger, revenge and settling quarrels, and about how a fight between two sides often benefits someone else. Pupils can retell it, suggest a better ending in which the two animals make peace, or compare it with the Unity is Strength chart. English and Hindi appear together on the standard chart, and Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil or Telugu editions serve regional-medium classes. The double-sided laminate wipes clean with a damp cloth; store the chart flat between lessons.
