What the Milky Colour Means
Carbon dioxide bubbled through lime water reacts with the calcium hydroxide to form calcium carbonate, which does not dissolve and turns the liquid milky. If more gas passes through, the carbonate changes to soluble calcium hydrogencarbonate and the liquid clears again, so stop bubbling once it turns cloudy.
Keeping It Fresh
Keep the bottle tightly stoppered: open lime water takes up carbon dioxide from the air and forms a white film of calcium carbonate, using up the reagent. Let any sediment settle and pour off the clear liquid for each test.
