Why do the balloons fill when the diaphragm is pulled down?
Pulling the diaphragm down enlarges the space inside the jar, so the air pressure around the balloons falls below the pressure outside. Air flows into the balloons until the pressures are equal; pushing the diaphragm in reverses this and the balloons empty.
Does the model show the role of the ribs?
No. The jar is rigid, so the model shows the diaphragm’s part; in the body the rib cage also moves as the intercostal muscles contract.
