The Oil-Film and Dust-Tube Experiments
For the oil film, dust a thin, even layer over clean water in a wide basin and add one small drop of oil. The oil pushes the powder back into a near-circular patch; the drop’s volume divided by the patch area gives the film thickness, an estimate of molecular size if the film is one molecule thick. In a dust tube, a little powder spread along a horizontal glass tube gathers into small heaps at the displacement nodes of a standing wave, and neighbouring heaps lie half a wavelength apart.
Keep the container closed and away from flames: as a cloud in the air, the fine dust burns very quickly.
