Sluice Room Training for Nursing Students
Nursing schools and hospital training wards use the macerator to teach the sluice room routine that follows bedpan care. In the skills lab, students first practise placing and removing a Bed Pan and offering a Male Urinal Pot. They then learn that pulp versions of these items go into the macerator chamber with their contents, while reusable ones like these are emptied and washed.
A loading exercise covers what may go in. Only pulp products are loaded, never gloves, wipes, plastic or metal items, which can jam the mixer or block the drain. Students close the lid before starting a cycle and wait for the cycle to finish before opening it again.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can go into a pulp macerator?
Only items made of moulded paper pulp, such as pulp bedpans, urine bottles, bowls and liners, along with their contents. Gloves, wet wipes, plastic bags and metal items do not break down and can jam the mixer or block the drain line.
Where does the macerated pulp go?
The mixer works the pulp and its contents into a fine slurry with water. The slurry is flushed out through the drain connection into the soil drain, so plan a water supply and a drain point where the machine will stand.
What power supply does this macerator need?
It is built for single-phase mains at 220 V or 110 V. State which supply your building uses when you send an enquiry, so the machine is wired for the right voltage.
Why does the lid open without being touched?
The touchless lid opens and closes without being pushed by hand. A nurse carrying a full pulp bedpan in both hands can load the chamber without first putting the bedpan down.
How is the macerator looked after?
Maintenance is simple. Keep the chamber and the lid seal free of pulp build-up and follow the cleaning routine your hospital sets. If cycles slow down or the slurry drains poorly, ask a technician to check for a part blockage in the drain line.
