What Is the Magic Ring Used For?

Circle theorems are easier to believe once pupils have drawn the figures accurately themselves. The ring gives them a fixed circular guide on the page: pencil marks made through its holes and around its edge turn into circles, chords, triangles and quadrilaterals drawn on one circle, ready for angles to be measured and compared. Three results follow from the figures. Any angle drawn from the ends of a diameter to the circle is a right angle. The opposite angles of a quadrilateral with all four corners on the circle add up to two right angles. Angles standing on the same chord, in the same segment of the circle, are equal.

These results belong to the circle geometry of secondary-school maths, where they are later proved, and the ring lets pupils check them first by drawing. On a whiteboard the same ring helps a teacher draw a clean circle and its figures in front of the class.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Number of rings — one per pupil or pair for drawing work, or one for the teacher’s whiteboard.
  • Other circle aids — for example the Geo Board Circle or the Circle Kit, on the same enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the Magic Ring?
Its outer diameter is 25 cm and its inner diameter is 20 cm.

What is it made of?
Plastic. It is a circular ring with holes at set distances along it.

Which circle theorems can it be used for?
The properties of a circle, the opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral, the angle in a semicircle being a right angle, and the equality of angles in the same segment of a circle.

Can it be used on a whiteboard?
Yes. It is designed to be placed on a drawing sheet or on a whiteboard, so it works for pupils’ own drawings and for teacher demonstrations.

Why is the angle in a semicircle a right angle?
Joining the point on the circle to the centre splits the triangle into two isosceles triangles, because all radii are equal. The angle at the circle is made of one base angle from each, and the triangle’s other two angles equal those same base angles, so the angle at the circle is half of the triangle’s angle sum — a right angle.

What should an export enquiry include?
The number of rings, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms you want (for example FOB or CIF), packing or labelling instructions and any tender reference.

Who manufactures the Magic Ring?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of maths lab equipment and school science apparatus in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The ring is made at JLab’s own works rather than bought in from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy factory-direct, each ring is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer itself. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example the Netherlands in Western Europe, Italy in Southern Europe, Congo in Central Africa, Hong Kong in East Asia and Samoa in Oceania. For tenders, see the JLab lab tenders page.

Related Circle Geometry Aids

  • Geo Board Circle — a circular geoboard with a printed protractor, used with rubber bands for the angle in a semicircle and angles in a segment.
  • Equal Chords of Congruent Circles — a set of 3 parts for the theorem that equal chords of congruent circles subtend equal angles.
  • Circle Kit — three circular disks of different radii for the radius, diameter and circumference relationship.
