Marine Plankton Microslide (code EL-CE-6774) is a Microslide set of 8 related 35 mm images, photographed through a microscope, of the tiny drifting life of the sea — diatoms, dinoflagellates, foraminifera, radiolarians, a crab zoea larva and mixed zooplankton — at magnifications from 20x to 200x. Arrows and callouts help students find the key features, and a text folder with a pocket for the Microslides comes with it. JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, Ambala, India) supplies it to schools, colleges and dealers.

What Does the Marine Plankton Set Show?

Plankton are the organisms that drift with ocean currents rather than swimming against them. The plant-like phytoplankton photosynthesise and sit at the base of marine food chains: diatoms, including Asterionella with its star-shaped colonies, build cell walls of silica, while Ceratium and Gymnodinium are dinoflagellates that move with two flagella. The animal-like zooplankton feed on them — foraminifera with shells mostly of calcium carbonate, radiolarians with delicate silica skeletons, and the zoea, the early larval stage of crabs and related crustaceans — and are in turn eaten by fish and other sea animals.

The set supports the protist section of the class 11 chapter on biological classification, food-chain and ecosystem lessons, and college marine biology. Students view each image in a Microslide Viewer, use the arrows and callouts to identify the structures, and then work through the questions in the text folder; keep the Microslides in the folder pocket afterwards. For schools far from the sea, it is a practical way to show organisms they cannot collect.

What to Specify When Ordering
