What Are the Number Cards Used For?
In the simplest game, a child is given a card and a pile of buttons or other small objects and counts out the number shown on the card. This links the written numeral to a real quantity and practises one-to-one counting. The cards can also be made into badges and pinned on, so every child knows their own number; when the teacher claps, the children get into a line in the right order and count off as quickly as they can. That turns ordering numbers and counting on into an active, whole-class game.
