What Is the Wooden Periscope Used For?
A periscope shows how plane mirrors can change the direction of light. Light from the object strikes the upper mirror at 45° and is turned through a right angle down the tube; the lower mirror turns it through a right angle again into the eye. Because the light is reflected twice, the image is upright and the right way round. In science lessons on light, students use the periscope to look over a desk or a wall, then trace the path of a ray through the tube to see that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection at each mirror. The same principle is used in submarine periscopes and in simple periscopes for seeing over a crowd.
Handle the periscope by the wooden body, avoid touching the mirror faces, and clean the mirrors with a soft dry cloth. Store it dry so the wood does not swell and the mirrors stay at their set angle.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units; a class set often has one periscope per group.
- Dimensions — if your lesson plan or tender gives a tube length or mirror size, include it so JLab can confirm.
- Other reflection apparatus — plane mirrors, a ray box or a kaleidoscope can be added to the same enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a periscope work?
By two reflections. The two mirrors sit at 45° at the ends of a Z-shaped tube, so light from an object above or below the eye, or behind an obstacle, is reflected down the tube and then out to the viewer.
Is the image upside down or laterally inverted?
Neither. With two plane mirrors the image is upright, and the second reflection reverses the left–right swap made by the first, so the scene is seen the right way round.
What is it made of?
The tube is wooden and the two mirrors are mounted at its ends at 45°, facing each other. The listing does not give the tube length or mirror size; ask JLab if you need them.
What should I include in an export enquiry?
The quantity, the destination country and port or city, your preferred delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling requirements, and the tender reference if there is one.
Who manufactures this periscope?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly as the manufacturer.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a school science and optics apparatus manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The wooden periscope is made at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers order it factory-direct, every piece is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region, for example Taiwan in East Asia, Austria in Western Europe, Canada in North America, Congo in Central Africa and North Macedonia in Southern Europe. For tenders, see the JLab lab tenders page.
