What Is a Polishing Cloth Used For?
In metallographic specimen preparation a mounted sample is first ground flat on abrasive papers and then polished on cloth-covered discs. The cloth holds the polishing medium — diamond compound or diamond spray in the earlier steps, alumina suspension at the end — and lets it cut evenly while the disc turns. After the final polish on a soft cloth, the specimen is etched and examined under a metallurgical microscope.
PSA-backed cloths are pressed straight onto a clean disc and peeled off when worn; plain cloths are stretched over the disc and held by a clamping ring, which is why they are cut larger than the disc. Keep one cloth per abrasive and grade, rinse the specimen between steps, and store spares covered.
