What Is Polishing Alumina Used For?
Alumina (aluminium oxide) is a very hard abrasive, and as a fine powder it removes the last scratches left by grinding papers so that a surface becomes smooth and reflective. In a metallography lab the powder is mixed with water into a slurry on a cloth-covered polishing wheel, and a ground metal specimen is polished in coarse-to-fine steps until it is free of scratches, ready for etching and examination under a metallurgical microscope. The same principle applies to the other listed work — lenses and acrylic optics, crystals, wafers, ferrites and gem stones — where a flawless surface matters.
Keep each grade on its own cloth and rinse the specimen between steps, because a few coarse particles carried onto a fine cloth will put scratches back on the surface.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Grade — the particle size or sizes you need for each polishing step.
- Pack size — the listing does not fix a pack weight, so state it.
- Cloths and machine — polishing cloths and polishing machines are separate items that can share the enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which particle sizes are available?
The listing does not state grades or particle sizes. Tell JLab which ones you use and the quote will be prepared for them.
Can it be used with a polishing cloth on a polishing machine?
Yes, that is the usual way. JLab’s polishing cloth listing names alumina suspension among the media its cloths are used with, and disc polishing machines are listed separately.
Who manufactures it?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, quoting directly as the manufacturer.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of laboratory equipment and lab consumables, incorporated in 2017 with its base on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The powder is produced at JLab’s own works rather than resold from a trader, which lets schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy direct; each pack is inspected by eye before it leaves. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Trinidad and Tobago in Central America and the Caribbean, Colombia in South America, the USA in North America, Zimbabwe in East Africa and Libya in North Africa.
Polishing and Metallography Items
- Polishing Cloth — hard and soft cloths for coarse and final polishing, used with alumina suspension.
- Polishing Powder Emery — an emery powder rubbed on a cloth to buff and clean surfaces.
- Single Disc Polishing Machine With Controller — a metallography specimen polisher with quick-change discs.
- Double Disc Polishing Machine (Floor Model) — two discs, so coarse and fine steps can run side by side.
- Monocular Upright Metallurgical Microscope — for examining the polished specimen.
