What Is the Knobbed Bell Jar Used For?
A knobbed bell jar is lifted by its knob and set down over whatever needs to be enclosed: a seedling or potted plant in transpiration and germination work, a specimen that must be kept free of dust, or a small set-up whose air must be kept separate from the room. The ground flange sits flat on a glass plate or tile, and a thin film of grease on the flange makes the seal airtight.
Soda glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes as well as borosilicate glass, so do not heat the jar or set it over hot objects. Wash it with warm, not boiling, water and store it on its flange.
