Silicon and Oxygen in Quartz
Every silicon atom in quartz is bonded to four oxygen atoms arranged as a tetrahedron, and every oxygen atom bridges two silicon atoms. The tetrahedra share corners and link into spiralling chains that run through the crystal. Strong covalent bonds hold the whole crystal together, so quartz is hard and melts only at a very high temperature, properties the model helps students tie back to structure.
