Distilling with a Retort
A retort combines the boiling vessel and the condenser in one piece. Liquid is charged through the stoppered opening and heated in the bulb; the vapour passes into the long side arm, cools along it and runs into a receiver placed under its end. That makes it a simple way to show distillation in teaching labs. Support the bulb with a clamp, heat it gently through a gauze, and keep the receiver cool, for example in a bowl of cold water.
