Air Core or Iron Core
With the core taken out, only air fills the tube, and its relative magnetic permeability is close to 1. Nothing inside can saturate, so the field stays proportional to the current. Sliding the iron core in magnetises the iron along the axis and makes the field from the same current much stronger, which is the principle of an electromagnet.
Inducing a Current
A voltage is induced in a coil only while the magnetic flux through it is changing: push a magnet in or pull it out, or switch the current on or off in a second coil placed alongside. A magnet held still or a steady current induces nothing. For the same change of flux, the 1200-turn coil gives a larger induced voltage than the 300-turn one, because every turn adds its share.
