How Does It Compare with Other JLab Potometers?
| Potometer | Design |
|---|---|
| This simple H-type potometer (EL-LS-5060) | H type; 140 mm capillary tube |
| Potometer Apparatus "H" Type | H type; 140 mm capillary tube; wide glass tube as reservoir; shoot fixed to the side arm with tubing |
| Potometer | Horizontal capillary graduated in millimetres; mounted on a wooden stand |
| Ganong Potometer Apparatus | Glass stopcock and reservoir for resetting the air bubble; varnished wooden base |
All of these measure water uptake by a cut shoot. The Ganong pattern lets students reset the bubble between readings from a reservoir, and the horizontal potometer comes on its own stand.
What Is a Potometer Used For?
A potometer measures the rate at which a leafy shoot draws up water. Because almost all of that water is lost from the leaves by transpiration, the uptake rate is a convenient stand-in for the transpiration rate. As the shoot takes up water, an air bubble or water meniscus moves along the capillary tube, and the distance it travels in a set time gives the rate. Students compare readings in still and moving air, in light and shade, or at different humidities, which makes it a standard piece of transpiration experiment kit for school biology and college botany labs.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Model — this simple H type or one of the other potometers above.
- Quantity — one per student or per group.
- Product code EL-LS-5060, so the simple H-type design is supplied.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a potometer measure?
The rate of water uptake by a cut leafy shoot, which closely follows its rate of transpiration.
How long is the capillary tube?
140 mm.
What information is needed for an export quotation?
Quantity, destination country and port or city, the delivery terms you want (FOB, CIF or similar), packing or labelling needs and any tender reference.
Who manufactures the Simple H Type Potometer?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a botany and biology lab equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Its registrations include GSTIN 06AADCJ9848D1ZE and Legal Entity Identifier 549300DTGS77DGYD6N03. The potometer is assembled at JLab’s own works, not bought in from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy from the maker and can reorder the same design later. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Singapore in Southeast Asia, DR Congo in Central Africa, Morocco in North Africa, Bolivia in South America and Belgium in Western Europe. Details for tender buyers are on the JLab lab tenders page.
