Bromide Ion Reactions
Acidified with dilute nitric acid, its solution gives a cream precipitate of silver bromide with silver nitrate; the precipitate dissolves in concentrated ammonia but hardly at all in dilute ammonia. Chlorine water releases bromine, and the orange colour passes into an organic solvent layer on shaking, showing that chlorine is the stronger oxidising agent. Concentrated sulphuric acid gives hydrogen bromide with brown bromine vapour, because the acid oxidises part of the hydrogen bromide.
