How the Imager Reads Surface Temperature
Every surface gives off infrared radiation whose strength rises with its temperature. The detector receives it through an 8–14 µm filter, the band in which objects near room temperature emit most strongly, and turns each of its 32 x 31 pixels into a temperature value, so the screen shows a colour map of the surface instead of one spot reading. Emissivity is preset to 0.95 and can be changed from 0.1 to 1; shiny metal emits less than a painted or matt surface at the same temperature, so setting the right value keeps such readings from coming out low.
What Comes in the Carry Case
The imager is packed with a carry case, a micro SD card, a CD, a USB cord, batteries and instructions, and reporting software is included. Images are saved in BMP format, and the 3.6 V rechargeable battery gives 3 hours of continuous use with the back-light on.
Other Ways to Measure Temperature
- Infrared Thermometer with Laser — non-contact spot thermometer aimed with a circular laser target.
- Type K Thermocouple — nickel-chromium / nickel-alumel sensor for direct-contact temperature readings.
Further inspection and test meters are in Miscellaneous, a section of Test and Measurement Equipment.
