Reading It Without Error
Keep the bulb fully in the liquid and away from the walls and bottom of the vessel, and stir gently so the bulb meets the average temperature. Wait until the column stops moving, then read with your eye level with the end of the liquid column; looking from above or below shifts the reading through parallax. For a cooling curve, note the reading at fixed time intervals.
Handling the Glass
Never use the thermometer to stir, and let it cool in air before rinsing, as a sudden change of temperature can crack the bulb. Store it lying flat rather than standing on its bulb.
