Reading the Root Tip Section
Cells in the growing region are small, thin-walled and closely packed, each with a large nucleus and little or no vacuole. Nuclei caught in division show their chromosomes as dark threads instead of the even, granular look of a resting nucleus.
Onion is a favourite for this work because its roots grow quickly from a bulb and its chromosomes are fairly large.
