Ammonium Molybdate (code EL-CL-12236) is the molybdenum salt that detects phosphate: in nitric acid solution it combines with phosphate ions to give a canary-yellow precipitate of ammonium phosphomolybdate. The Yellow Phosphomolybdate Test
The sample is acidified with nitric acid, ammonium molybdate solution is added in excess and the tube is warmed; a yellow precipitate confirms phosphate. Arsenate gives a similar yellow precipitate, so arsenic is removed in group II before the test is relied on.
Measuring Phosphate by Colour
For low phosphate levels, the molybdate complex is reduced, for example with ascorbic acid or tin(II) chloride, to an intense blue whose depth is read on a colorimeter against standards. The method is used for phosphate in water, soil and fertiliser samples.
