Filling a Capillary for a Melting Point
Seal one end by turning it in the edge of a small flame. Press the open end into the dry, finely powdered sample, then drop the tube sealed end down through a longer glass tube so the solid packs to a depth of a few millimetres. Fix it beside the thermometer bulb or load it into a melting point apparatus, heat slowly near the expected value, and record the range from first liquid to complete melting.
