What Is the Chloroscope Used For?

Public water supplies and swimming pools are chlorinated to disinfect them, and the small amount of chlorine still present afterwards — the residual chlorine — shows whether that protection has reached the tap or the pool. This chlorine test kit lets public health inspectors, water testing labs, pool operators and industrial labs check that residual at the sampling point by simple colour matching, with no meter to calibrate. In teaching it suits environmental science and public health engineering practicals in colleges and polytechnics, and school water testing projects that compare tap, tank and pool water.

To run a test, fill a test tube with the water sample up to the 5 ml mark, add 1 to 2 drops of o-tolidine solution with the dropper, shake well and leave the tube for ten minutes while the colour develops. Then insert the tube in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd hole of the chloroscope, compare it with the colour standard and note the reading from the ppm scale on the front. Match colours in good, even light. When testing is complete, pour out the sample and clean the tube with fresh water and a cleaning brush. O-tolidine is a hazardous chemical, so wear gloves, avoid skin contact and keep the reagent out of reach of children.
