Taking a Bearing, Then a Slope Angle
For a bearing, hold the compass level and look at the object through the peep sights of the handle-shaped sight; the needle then gives its magnetic heading. For a vertical angle, turn the compass on its side and sight the same object: the weighted arm settles under gravity and shows how far the line of sight rises above or falls below the horizontal.
Reading the Three Scales
The arm is read against one of three scales: the angle in degrees beneath the zenith (measured from straight up), the angle in degrees of elevation or tilt, and the slope in inches per yard. The last scale gives a gradient directly, without working it out from an angle. Before the compass is packed, the needle lift mechanism raises the needle off its jewel, so the jewel and the arm are protected while it is carried.
