Cobalt Chloride Paper (code EL-SLE-4769) is a test paper used to show the presence of water, either as a liquid or as vapour, in school science practicals. A dry leaf is blue and turns pink when it comes into contact with water molecules, and each pack holds 100 leaves. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

What Is Cobalt Chloride Paper Used For?
In school biology it is the usual way to show that leaves give off water vapour during transpiration. Dry blue strips are held against the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf, for example between two glass slides, and students compare how quickly each one turns pink; in most broad (dorsiventral) leaves the lower surface, which carries more stomata, changes first. In chemistry the paper confirms that a liquid contains water — such as the droplets that condense above a burning candle, or the water driven off when blue copper sulphate crystals are heated. A pink result shows that water is present, not that the liquid is pure water.
Keep the leaves in a closed container in a dry place, ideally a desiccator, take out only what the class needs, and pick strips up with forceps, because moisture from fingers is enough to turn them pink. A strip that has gone pink from damp air can usually be dried gently in a warm oven until it is blue again before use. Cobalt chloride is a hazardous chemical, so avoid skin contact, keep the paper away from food and mouths, wash hands after the practical and discard used strips as your lab rules require.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Number of packs — each pack holds 100 leaves and the minimum order is 10 units.
- Leaf size — the listing does not state it, so mention any strip size your experiment or tender calls for.
- Companion items — forceps, a desiccator for storage or a potometer for transpiration work can be added to the same enquiry.
- Destination and delivery terms — for export, give the country, port or city and the terms you prefer, such as FOB or CIF.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does cobalt chloride paper detect?
Water. The blue paper turns pink when it touches water, whether as a liquid or as vapour, which is why it is used to test for water and to show water loss from leaves.
How many leaves are in a pack, and what size are they?
Each pack contains 100 leaves. The leaf size is not given in this listing, so ask JLab when you enquire if you need a particular size.
Does a pink result prove that a liquid is pure water?
No. It only shows that water is present; a solution containing water will also turn the paper pink. Purity is usually checked by measuring the boiling or freezing point.
Who manufactures this cobalt chloride paper?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of school science and laboratory equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Its test papers come from the company’s own works rather than from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy them factory-direct, every pack is checked by eye before it is packed, and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer itself. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Tunisia in North Africa, Uganda in East Africa, Burkina Faso in West Africa, Armenia in Eastern Europe and Bhutan in South Asia.

- pH Indicator Paper — indicator leaves that change colour to show the pH of a solution, read against a colour chart.
- Litmus Paper Blue — turns red in acids, for simple acid and base tests.
- Forceps — stainless steel forceps for picking up test strips without touching them.
