Use Afloat and on the Trail
On a boat, place the compass clear of the engine, steel fittings and electronics, which pull the needle away from magnetic north. On a hike, hold it level in front of you and let the needle settle before taking a direction. Wipe off salt spray and moisture with a soft cloth to protect the varnish.
