Reading the Diamond Lattice
In the finished model every carbon atom is joined to four others that point to the corners of a tetrahedron, and the pattern repeats in all three directions. Since every outer electron is held in a strong covalent bond, the network is rigid, which is why diamond is so hard and melts only at a very high temperature. With no free electrons left over, diamond does not conduct electricity.
