What the Graphite Model Shows
Once built, the model shows carbon atoms joined in hexagonal rings that make up flat sheets, each atom bonded to three neighbours within its own sheet. The sheets are stacked with a larger gap between them, because only weak forces hold one layer to the next. That explains two properties students meet in class: graphite is soft and slippery because the layers slide over one another, and it conducts electricity along the layers because the fourth outer electron of each carbon is free to move.
