How Does It Compare with Other JLab Compasses?

CompassConstructionMain use
This compass (EL-LS-5105)Hand-held, pocket type; lanyard, protective cover and instructionsFinding direction on the move
Navigating CompassAluminium frame; floating needle set in the caseStudent experiments on direction and magnetic fields
Magnetic Plotting CompassNeedle in a circular container with a printed scale and glass top; three diametersPlotting magnetic field lines around magnets, wires and coils

Choose the directional compass when students need a compass they can carry, with a lanyard and cover; the plotting compass is the bench tool for tracing magnetic fields.

What Is the Directional Compass Used For?

A magnetic compass needle lines up with the Earth’s magnetic field, so one end points towards magnetic north and the user can work out the other directions from it. Students use a directional compass to find north and orient a map on field trips, and to see in class that a freely suspended magnet always settles in the north–south direction — a topic in the class 6 science chapter on magnets and in map-reading lessons in geography. The lanyard keeps the compass on hand outdoors, and the protective cover guards it in a pocket or bag.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Number of compasses — for example one per student or per group for field work.
  • Plotting or navigating compasses for physics practicals, to quote on the same enquiry.
  • Delivery location and any labelling requirements.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of school science equipment, magnetism apparatus and laboratory supplies in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The compasses are made at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so schools, dealers and importers buy them factory-direct and can reorder the same model for new classes. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Thailand in Southeast Asia, Romania in Eastern Europe, Tunisia in North Africa, Ivory Coast in West Africa and Guyana in South America. Information for tender buyers is on the JLab lab tenders page.
