What Are Wood Splints Used For?
The splint test is the classic way to identify gases in school chemistry. A splint that is lit and then blown out so that it only glows bursts back into flame in oxygen, which is how the gas collected at the anode during the electrolysis of water is confirmed; a lighted splint at the mouth of a tube of hydrogen goes out with a squeaky pop. These tests are part of class 10 chemistry and of college demonstrations. Because the wood is thin and light it catches quickly, so a class can repeat the test many times.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Number of splints for the class or term.
- Electrolysis and gas-test apparatus — a Hoffman voltameter, gas jars or a deflagrating spoon can be quoted on the same enquiry.
- Destination and delivery terms, for example FOB or CIF.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size are the Wood Splints?
Each splint is 139 mm long, 4 mm wide and 1 mm thick.
How does a wood splint show that a gas is oxygen?
A glowing splint — lit, then blown out — relights when it is put into oxygen. This is the usual test for the oxygen given off in an electrolysis demonstration.
Can the splints be used for other tests?
Yes. They suit a variety of applications, such as the lighted-splint pop test for hydrogen and lighting burners.
Who manufactures the Wood Splints?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes them at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for them directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of chemistry lab supplies and apparatus in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The splints are cut at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy them factory-direct, they are visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Turkey in the Middle East, Singapore in Southeast Asia, Latvia in Northern Europe, Gabon in Central Africa and Cyprus in Southern Europe. School tenders are covered on the JLab lab tenders page.
Electrolysis and Gas-Test Apparatus
- Hoffman Voltameter with All Accessories — electrolysis apparatus with graduated limbs and removable carbon electrodes for showing the composition of water.
- Gas Jar with Lid, Glass — a glass jar with lid for collecting gases produced in experiments.
- Deflagrating Spoon With Lid — a steel combustion spoon for burning a small sample inside a jar of gas.
- Spirit Lamps (aluminium) — aluminium lamps that give a small, steady flame.
