Choose this model for routine demonstrations where carbon electrodes are acceptable and you want the accessories supplied with it. The PTFE model comes with both carbon and platinum electrodes, the platinum-electrode voltameter on its metal stand suits more careful volume work, and the small test-tube voltameter is a compact bench option.

What Is the Hoffman Voltameter Used For?

The Hoffman voltameter shows that water can be split by electricity into hydrogen and oxygen, and that the two gases form in a fixed ratio by volume. A direct current is passed through water made conducting with a little dilute sulphuric acid or sodium sulphate; hydrogen collects in the limb over the negative electrode (cathode) and oxygen in the limb over the positive electrode (anode). The hydrogen volume comes out about twice the oxygen volume, matching two volumes of hydrogen to one of oxygen in water. The experiment appears in class 10 chemistry as an example of decomposition by electricity and returns in senior classes and college courses on electrolysis, making the voltameter a core piece of chemistry lab equipment for schools in India and overseas.

Clamp the apparatus upright, fill it with the electrolyte until the graduated limbs are full and free of air, then connect the electrodes to a low-voltage DC supply and read both volumes on the graduations as the gases collect. To identify the gases, draw each off through the tap at the top of its limb: hydrogen burns with a squeaky pop and oxygen relights a glowing splint. With carbon electrodes the oxygen reading can be a little low at first, because some oxygen dissolves in the water or reacts with the carbon, so let the apparatus run for a while before taking readings. Wear eye protection when handling the acid electrolyte, and rinse the glass and remove the electrodes to dry after use.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units, each supplied with its accessories.
  • Accessory list — ask JLab to confirm exactly which accessories are packed with the voltameter, such as a stand or connecting leads.
  • Power supply and chemicals — a DC source such as a battery eliminator and the electrolyte are separate items and can go on the same enquiry.
  • Spare electrodes — extra carbon electrodes if the apparatus will be used often.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Hoffman voltameter demonstrate?
It demonstrates the chemical composition of water by volume. Electrolysis splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, which collect in separate graduated limbs so their volumes can be compared directly.

Why is the hydrogen volume twice the oxygen volume?
Each water molecule contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, so electrolysis releases two molecules of hydrogen for every molecule of oxygen. Equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules, so the hydrogen occupies about twice the volume.

What is the capacity of the limbs?
The limbs are graduated to 50 ml, so students read the gas volumes straight from the scale on each limb.

Which electrodes does it use?
Removable carbon electrodes, which are easy to take out and replace, though the oxygen reading can be slightly low because some oxygen reacts with the carbon; JLab also lists voltameters supplied with platinum electrodes.

Which accessories are included?
The voltameter is listed as supplied with all accessories, but the listing does not itemise them. Ask JLab for the packing list; a DC power supply and the electrolyte chemicals are not mentioned and should be ordered separately if needed.

How is the voltameter packed for shipping?
It is packed in thermocol packaging to protect the glass during transport.

Who manufactures this voltameter?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it as the manufacturer.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a chemistry and physics lab equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The voltameter is made at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, which lets schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy factory-direct; every unit is visually inspected before it is packed, and repeat orders and spare electrodes are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and can supply buyers in every region, such as Ethiopia in East Africa, Chile in South America, Tajikistan in Central Asia, Australia in Oceania and Poland in Eastern Europe. Tender buyers will find details on the JLab lab tenders page.
