Choose this model when a sturdy, stout-walled funnel with a long 300 mm stem is wanted for repeated class use. If your specification calls for borosilicate glass or fixed diameters, the borosilicate listings state those details on their own pages.

What Is a Thistle Funnel Used For?

In gas preparation practicals the thistle funnel passes through one hole of a two-hole cork in a flask holding zinc granules or marble chips, with a delivery tube through the other hole. Dilute acid is poured in through the funnel to make hydrogen or carbon dioxide, and because the end of the stem stays below the liquid, the gas leaves only through the delivery tube. In biology the same funnel is used for osmosis: a semi-permeable membrane is tied over the mouth, the funnel is filled with sugar solution and inverted in water, and the liquid rises up the stem. Insert the stem into a cork gently with a little water or glycerine as lubricant, holding it close to the cork and protecting your hand with a cloth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the stem length of this thistle funnel?
300 mm. The head and stem diameters are not given in the listing, so ask JLab if the funnel must fit an existing cork or rubber stopper.

Why must the stem end be below the acid?
The liquid seals the bottom of the stem, so the gas produced cannot escape up through the funnel and is forced out through the delivery tube instead.

Is this thistle funnel made of borosilicate glass?
The listing describes it as stout walled but does not state the glass type. Ask for borosilicate in your enquiry if your tender requires it, or see the borosilicate thistle funnels compared above.

Who manufactures this thistle funnel?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly as the manufacturer.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a laboratory glassware and science equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana.
