How It Works in a Gas Preparation
The stem goes through one hole of a two-hole stopper in the generating flask and a delivery tube through the other. Acid poured into the head runs down onto the solid, such as zinc for hydrogen or marble chips for carbon dioxide. The end of the stem must sit below the liquid in the flask: the liquid seals it, so the gas leaves through the delivery tube instead of back up the funnel.
The funnel also works as a warning gauge. If the delivery tube blocks, pressure pushes liquid up the stem, a sign to stop adding acid and clear the tube.
Fitting the Stem Safely
Wet the 7 mm stem with water or glycerol, hold it close to the stopper with a cloth around your hand, and twist it in gently rather than pushing. Forcing a glass stem into rubber is a common cause of cut hands at the bench.
