What Is the Glass Delivery Tube Used For?
A delivery tube is the link in almost every gas-preparation set-up. One end passes through a bored rubber bung in a flat bottom flask or boiling tube, and the other end leads the gas into a gas jar standing over water in a pneumatic trough, upwards or downwards into a jar by displacement of air, or into a test solution — for example carbon dioxide bubbled into lime water in middle school and class 10 science. In class 11 and 12 chemistry and in college labs the same tubes connect generators, wash bottles and absorption tubes. The 90° tube suits most bench set-ups, while the 120° and 105° bends let the outlet reach a trough or jar at a convenient angle.
Soda lime glass softens readily in a Bunsen flame, so teachers can also bend or draw the straight tubes to the shape a practical needs, but it stands sudden temperature changes less well than borosilicate glass. To fit a tube into a bung, wet the end, hold the tube close to the bung through a cloth and push it in with a gentle twist — never force it. When collecting gas over water, take the delivery tube out of the water before removing the heat so that water is not sucked back into the hot flask.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Type — straight tubes, bent mixed packs, or both, with the quantity of each (minimum order 10 units).
- Lengths — tell JLab the lengths your set-ups need so the quote can confirm them.
- Bungs and fittings — bored rubber bungs, rubber tubing and a cork borer if you are equipping gas-preparation benches.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a glass delivery tube used for?
Carrying gas from the vessel where it is produced to where it is collected or tested — a gas jar over water, a jar filled by displacement of air, or a test solution such as lime water.
What size are the straight tubes?
5 to 6 mm outside diameter with a wall of 0.8 to 0.9 mm, in soda lime glass. Check that your bung holes suit this diameter.
Which bends are in the bent pack?
The mixed pack holds one tube each bent at 120°, 105° and 90°, so the outlet can be set at different angles to the trough or jar.
How long are the tubes?
The listing does not state the lengths clearly. Give the lengths you need in your enquiry and JLab will confirm them in the quotation.
Can the straight tube be bent in the lab?
Yes. Soda lime glass softens in an ordinary Bunsen flame, so it can be bent or drawn into a jet; let it cool slowly on a heat-proof mat before use.
What does an export quotation need?
Quantities of straight tubes and bent packs, the destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling instructions and any tender reference.
Who manufactures these delivery tubes?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes them at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes directly as the manufacturer.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of chemistry lab glassware and school science equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The delivery tubes are made at JLab’s own works rather than sourced from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy them factory-direct, every tube is checked visually before packing, and repeat orders are made by the same manufacturer. The company holds MSME Udyam registration UDYAM-HR-01-0003849 (manufacturing enterprise) and Importer-Exporter Code 3317504552. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Cameroon in Central Africa, Barbados in Central America and the Caribbean, Zimbabwe in East Africa, Ireland in Western Europe and Namibia in Southern Africa. Tender details are on the JLab lab tenders page.
