Two Classic Set-Ups
Gas preparation: the stem passes through a two-hole cork into the flask, with its tip below the liquid. The liquid seals the stem, so gas leaves through the delivery tube instead of escaping back up the funnel, while acid can still be added through the head.
Osmosis: tie a semipermeable membrane over the wide mouth, fill the funnel with sugar solution and stand it mouth-down in water. Water enters through the membrane and the solution rises up the stem, showing osmotic pressure at work.
