Cutting and Finishing Soda Glass Tubing
To shorten a tube, make one firm scratch with a glass-cutting file, wrap the tube in a cloth and snap it away from the scratch. Turn each cut end in a Bunsen flame until the sharp rim rounds off, then leave it to cool on a heat-resistant mat. Soda glass softens at a lower temperature than borosilicate glass, which is why it is the usual choice when tubing has to be bent in a burner flame.
