What Happens During Electrolysis
Fill the apparatus through the reservoir bulb with water containing a little dilute sulfuric acid, since pure water conducts poorly. Open both stopcocks until the limbs are full, close them and connect a DC supply. Hydrogen collects above the cathode (negative electrode) and oxygen above the anode (positive electrode), each gas pushing liquid down its limb and up into the reservoir. The hydrogen volume builds to about twice the oxygen volume, a 2:1 ratio that reflects the two hydrogen atoms for each oxygen atom in water. Platinum is used because it does not react with the gases or the acid, so only the water is decomposed.
Testing the Collected Gases
Each gas can be drawn off through its stopcock into a test tube: hydrogen burns with a squeaky pop at a lighted splint, while oxygen relights a glowing splint.
