Interpreting a Blue Strip
Dip the end of a strip into the test liquid, or touch it with a drop carried on a glass rod, and look at the wetted part. Red or pink means the solution is below pH 4.5. Purple places it between 4.5 and 8.3. A strip that stays blue shows a value above 8.3. Red litmus paper is the usual partner, since it turns blue in alkaline liquids, so the two together sort acids from bases.
Keeping the Strips Usable
Take strips out with dry fingers or forceps and close the vial straight away; acid fumes in a shared cupboard can redden blue paper before it is used. Shelf life depends on storage, and the batch expiry date is given with the quotation.
