How the Ribs Speed Up Filtering

A paper cone pressed flat against a smooth wall traps air and the liquid runs slowly. The internal ribs hold the paper a little away from the plastic, so air escapes and the filtrate keeps moving. The external ribs leave a gap where the funnel rests in the neck of a flask, letting air out of the receiver as it fills.

Using It with Filter Paper

Fold a paper circle in half and in half again, open it into a cone, seat it in the funnel and wet it with a little distilled water so it stays in place. Let the stem tip touch the inside of the receiving vessel to cut splashing, and rinse the funnel straight after use so nothing dries in the ribs.
