How the Ribbed Cone Speeds Filtration
On a smooth cone, wet filter paper clings to the wall and traps air, and the flow slows to a drip. The ribs on this funnel hold the paper off the plastic in narrow channels, so displaced air leaves and the liquid drains down the stem. Fold a paper circle in half and then in quarters, open one side into a cone, wet it so it sits against the ribs, and keep the liquid level below the paper rim. Polypropylene will not shatter if the funnel is knocked off the bench.
