What the Chart Teaches
Water molecules can react with one another to form H3O+ and OH− ions. At pH 7 the two are present in equal numbers and the solution is neutral. Solutions below pH 7 are acidic and those above pH 7 are basic, and the chart sets these regions side by side with the matching indicator colours.
Reading a Result Against the Chart
Add a few drops of universal indicator solution to the sample, or wet a strip of indicator paper, then hold it beside the chart and pick the closest colour. Read in good white light, because yellowish lighting shifts how greens and blues appear.
