What Are Number-Bond Cards Used For?

A number bond shows a whole and the two parts that make it, so a single diagram holds a whole family of facts. A bond with 10 as the whole and 3 and 7 as the parts gives 3 + 7 = 10, 7 + 3 = 10, 10 − 3 = 7 and 10 − 7 = 3; the same layout works for a product and its factors. That is how number bonds take students beyond just practising maths facts: they show how numbers relate, and that subtraction undoes addition and division undoes multiplication.

In a lesson, the teacher can set a bond with one part missing, students fill it in on their own card and hold it up, and every answer is visible at once — a quick formative check before moving on. The cards then wipe clean for the next problem. They suit group work, pairs testing each other and individual practice, from early addition and subtraction to multiplication and division in the primary years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cards are in a set, and how big are they?
30 cards, each 5 x 5 inches (about 12.7 cm square).

How do the cards help with formative assessment?
Each student writes an answer on a card and holds it up, so the teacher, or other students, can see everyone’s answer at the same moment and spot who needs help.

Can the cards be used again?
Yes. They are write-on wipe-off cards: problems and answers go on with dry erase markers and wipe off afterwards.

Do number bonds cover multiplication and division?
Yes. As well as addition and subtraction, number bonds illustrate the inverse relationship between multiplication and division.

What should an export enquiry include?
The number of sets, the destination country and port or city, preferred delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing or labelling instructions, and a tender reference if you have one.
