What Are Entomological Pins Used For?
Insect pins hold a dried specimen in place for examination and long-term storage. In the usual method the pin is pushed vertically through the insect’s thorax, the specimen is raised to a consistent height on the pin, and the collection labels are added lower down on the same pin before it is pressed into the lined base of an insect box. Students building a collection for class 11 work on the animal kingdom and arthropods, or for college zoology and agricultural entomology courses, use them to arrange specimens by group so features such as wings, legs and mouthparts can be compared under a hand lens.
Because the pins are stainless steel they resist rusting in a stored collection, and the coloured metal heads are easy to see and grip when pins are moved or specimens re-labelled. Handle the points with care and keep spare pins in a closed container.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are these entomological pins made of?
The pins are stainless steel with metal heads; the heads are supplied in different colours.
Which pin size should I order?
The listing does not give lengths or thicknesses. Insect pins are generally made in a range of thicknesses for small to large specimens, so tell JLab the size you need and the quotation will confirm what is offered and how many pins come in each pack.
Can they be used for specimens other than insects?
Yes — they are listed for pinning insects and other miniature specimens for observation.
Who makes these pins?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) manufactures them in Ambala, Haryana, and supplies them direct.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a biology and zoology lab equipment manufacturer in India incorporated in 2017, with its base on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The pins are produced at JLab’s own works and not sourced from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy them factory-direct and can reorder from the same maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Egypt in North Africa, Mexico in North America, Gabon in Central Africa, Fiji in Oceania and South Africa in Southern Africa. See the JLab lab tenders page for tender enquiries.
