Eosin as a Counterstain
Nuclear stains such as haematoxylin colour nuclei blue to purple but leave the cytoplasm pale. A short dip in eosin afterwards turns cytoplasm and fibres pink, so each cell shows a dark nucleus against a pink body. Rinse off excess stain before mounting, as overstaining lowers the contrast.
Eosin marks skin and benches, so wipe drips at once and keep the bottle closed.
