How a CO2 Extinguisher Puts Out a Fire
The cylinder holds carbon dioxide as a liquid under its own pressure. Squeezing the lever opens the brass valve, and the gas expands out of the horn as a cold cloud that pushes oxygen away from the flames and cools them. Aim the horn at the base of the fire and keep hands off the horn itself, which gets very cold during discharge.
Reading the 5-B:C Label
On the label, B refers to fires in flammable liquids such as solvents and fuels, and C to fires in live electrical equipment. The UN1013 and Class 2.2 marks identify the contents as carbon dioxide, a non-flammable gas, for transport and storage.
