Taking a Reading
Pull out a short piece of strip and tear it off, then dip it briefly in the liquid or touch it with a drop carried on a clean glass rod. Match the colour with the pH chart within seconds, as a strip left standing in air keeps changing and no longer gives a fair match. Testing a drop rather than dipping into a stock bottle keeps the indicator dye out of the solution.
Where the Strip Is Used
In class, the strip sorts household and laboratory liquids into acids and alkalis. It is also used to check water quality, aquarium water and soil; the soil is first shaken with distilled water, and the liquid is tested once the soil has settled.
Store the reel in its closed case in a dry place, away from acid and ammonia fumes that can colour the paper. How long the paper keeps its colour response depends on how it is stored; the batch expiry date comes with the quotation.
