A Classic Diffusion Run
Lay the tube flat and, at the same moment, push cotton wool soaked in concentrated ammonia solution into one end and cotton wool soaked in concentrated hydrochloric acid into the other. A white ring of ammonium chloride forms where the two gases meet, nearer the acid end, because ammonia molecules are lighter and diffuse faster, as Graham’s law predicts. Do this in a fume cupboard.
