Timing a Free Fall Between Photogates
The timer measures how long the steel ball takes to fall between photogates, and the fall distance is read off the 1.2 m scale. For a ball starting from rest that falls a height h in time t, h = ½gt², so g = 2h/t². Repeating the drop at several heights and plotting h against t² gives a straight line of slope g/2, which smooths out the error in any single reading. Its memory keeps five time values, so a short series of drops can be run before the readings are copied down.
